Winter Sports Awards

St. Francis of Assisi School held their annual Winter Sports Awards Night, where athletes in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade were each recognized for their contributions to an outstanding basketball season.  Four teams participated, including Girls Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls B Basketball, and Boys B Basketball.  The Girls A Basketball Team came in third place in Orange County for the Parochial Athletic League’s Large School Division, and the Boys B Basketball Team went undefeated.

In addition to each player being awarded a certificate, several players were acknowledged as Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Most Improved Player, and others received the Coach’s Award.

For Girls A Basketball, with Coach Pete Toomey, special recognition went to:

Katie M for Most Improved Player; Andrea H for Most Outstanding Defensive Award; Morgan M for Most Outstanding Offensive Player; and Katie C for Coach’s Award.

For Boys A Basketball, with Coach Don Hester, special recognition went to:

Connor M for Most Improved Player; Corey K for Most Outstanding Defensive Player; Will H for Most Outstanding Offensive Player, and Nathan H for Coach’s Award.

For Girls B Basketball, with Coaches Jeff Christiansen and Doug Goodkind, special recognition went to:

Caroline W for Most Improved Player; Erica P for Most Outstanding Offensive Player; Ashlynn W for Most Outstanding Defensive Player;  and Sydney L for Coach’s Award.

For Boys B Basketball, with Coaches Joe Mauthe and Brett Caya, special recognition went to:

Brandon L for Most Improved Player; TJ M and Nick M for Most Outstanding Defensive Players; Reilly C for Most Outstanding Offensive Player, and Lucas A for Coach’s Award.

Principal Tom Waszak and  Athletic Director Debbie Handy praised the students for their great effort, balancing schoolwork and team responsibilities, with a great attitude. They also acknowledged the important role of coaches and parents to provide students with an outstanding athletic experience.

Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parents and Students,

The deadline is approaching for our second of two Box Tops contests!

Our second contest ends Friday, February 24th.  You will find a collection sheet you can download from this link.  Please trim your Box Tops and tape or glue them onto the sheet and print your child’s name and class information onto the form.  Each sheet holds 25 Box Tops, but if you do not have enough to complete it, please send it in partially filled.  (If you have Bonus Box Tops that are worth more, or any additional Box Tops beyond the 25 that fit on the sheet, please submit those in a Ziploc baggie or an envelope labeled with your child’s name and teacher.) You can give your Box Tops to your teacher or to the front desk of the school office.

The class that gathers the most Box Tops by the deadline of Friday, February 24th will earn a reward party of their choice (cupcakes, pizza, ice cream, root beer floats, popcorn, etc.)

Check the expiration dates!  We cannot count any Box Tops that have reached their expiration date, or ones that have the expiration date missing!

Additional collection sheets are available from your child’s teacher, or in the bins inside the office.  There will ALWAYS be collection sheets available inside the office, even when a contest is not running.  PLEASE feel free to use them all throughout the year, and we will keep track of the submissions and count them towards the next contest!  Or, shoot Vickie Maricich an email ( and it will be forwarded to you to print out!

Also, the Box Tops website ( has several contests that can earn as many as 500,000 bonus box tops for our school (yes, that is a value of $50,000!) So, please visit their website, register with them and enter every day.  Some lucky winner is going to get those credits, and it might as well be us!

A Note from Mrs. Cooper

Dear St. Francis of Assisi Community,

Words cannot express the gratitude I have for all you have done for my family and I over the past few months, weeks, and days. This has been an extremely difficult time for us, but you have made us feel so loved. I have always felt blessed to be a part of this community, but your love, prayers and support have truly helped us. Thank you for the prayers, cards, flowers and the food.

Thank you to every student for writing their prayers on the prayer chain. My children put the chain up in our family room where my husband’s bed was. He was so touched by the beautiful chain. The chain completely surrounded him and gave him a sense of peace.

I was amazed by the students, alumni and parents who attended the services for my husband. I could not have been prouder of all the students so nicely dressed in their Mass attire. Thank you.

Thank you to the eighth grade students who showed up early to the Memorial Mass to hand out programs. Thank you for helping to serve and clean-up at the reception. You are a wonderful group of young ladies and gentlemen

Thank you to all the parents who brought food for the reception. I was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone. Thank you to those who helped organize the food. Thank you to Mrs. Purpura and Mrs. Campbell for coordinating the reception. It was a tremendous burden that was taken off my shoulders, and I am so very grateful.

Principal’s Message 2/7/12

Dear St. Francis parents,

Wow! What a week! Open House, Catholic Schools Week, and the Auction Dinner Dance all within seven days! The response by parents at all three events was outstanding! Open House drew 90+% of our families along with 60 new families representing approximately 100 potential students, the majority entering preschool and prekindergarten in the fall. Catholic Schools Week highlights include school mass, vocations talks by Fr. Joe and Fr. John, blessing of the throats, and the parent volunteer breakfast hosted by St. Francis faculty and staff. The weeklong activities culminated with the 14th annual Auction at the Disneyland Hotel.

A sell out crowd of over 300 St. Francis supporters enjoyed an evening filled with special recognition, great items to bid, a lively oral auction, dinner and dancing. It was truly a celebration of community. Final numbers are not available at this time but my intuition and that of others in attendance predict a very successful auction. I am humbled by the large number of families who generously supported the auction by attending and bidding on silent and oral auction items, and by donating auction items. Our auction co-chairs Jennifer Bush and Rosanna Medina, as well as the many volunteers, are to be congratulated for an outstanding evening of fundraising.

The highlight of the evening was the special recognition honoring Fr. Seamus and Laurie Wayre Schoenke. In honor of Fr. Seamus’ devotion and passionate support for St. Francis of Assisi School the St. Clare Center will be renamed the Fr. Seamus Anthony Glynn Center. The Fr. Seamus Anthony Glynn Center will be an enduring reminder to the St. Franics community of Fr. Seamus’ extraordinary contributions to the school. Also unveiled at the auction was the inaugural presentation of the Distinguished Parent Service Award. Mrs. Laurie Wayre Schoenke was named the first recipient of the award for her exceptional record of generous and selfless service to the school community. The resounding ovation received by both award recipients displayed a heartfelt appreciation for their extraordinary service and passion for St. Francis of Assisi School. Fr. Seamus and Laurie Wayre Scholeke are wonderful examples of the Christ-like servant embodied by our patron, St. Francis. We are grateful for their loving care and generosity!

Principal’s Message 1/31/12

Dear parents,

Thank you for making Open House a wonderfully successful day.  My hope was to celebrate our students and our school, and aside from a windy start, the day surpassed all of my expectations!  The success of Open House was possible due to the dedicated efforts of every segment of our school community.  It starts with parents who provide their children with the gift of a Catholic education.  Next are the teachers and staff who partner with parents on the journey through childhood and adolescence.  The formation process is not complete without the connection to the parish.

Over 90% of our families attended, visiting classrooms displaying student work and talking with teachers.  Our pastors were a visible reminder that our community is built on a faith foundation.  Open House also provided a connection between our present, future, and past.  There were an impressive number of alumni who came back to visit with teachers and fellow graduates and an equally notable number of new families visiting our campus.  I know that our visitors were impressed by what our school can inspire kids to become.

The time and dedication put forth by our school community was evident in every corner of the campus.  There was an outstanding display of student work and talent in the classrooms.  The St. Clare Center summarized the highlights of the St.Francis experience including academics, activities, and parent support groups. Parent volunteers were everywhere serving as greeters, tour guides, and stocking tables with goodies.  This was truly a team effort and a wonderful display of our generosity and school pride.  I was very proud of our extraordinary display of achievement and community.

Open House was a remarkable day and a true indication of what our school can accomplish when we work together!

Dear parents,

We are now accepting registration for next year’s St. Francis Pre-school and pre-kindergarten classes. Registration for 2012-2013 pre-school and pre-kindergarten classes began on January 30 and will continue until classes are full. If you did not pick up registration materials at Open House you may do so at the Main Office. To secure your child’s enrollment, please return your completed registration forms along with the $425 registration fee. Classes are limited to 20 students and will close when filled. Please note that the registration process for pre-school and pre-K has changed this year. In the past, parents submitted registration materials and fees at the same time as Kindergarten through 8th grade. Based on the strong turnout at Open House we anticipate that classes will attain full enrollment. Class offerings for 2012-2013 have also changed. All prices are based on 10 monthly payments.

Pre-School (3 years old by September 1, 2012)

2 day program     T, Th          8:30 am – 11:30 am  $250/month

3 day program     M,W,F      8:30 am – 11:30 am  $250/month

5 day program     M – F         8:30 am – 2:30 pm   $547.50/month

Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old by September 1, 2012)

3 day program     M,W,F     8:30 am – 2:30 pm  $547.50/month

5 day program     M – F        8:30 am – 2:30 pm  $475/month

Extended Day Care for pre-school and pre-k is available at 7:30 am – 8:30 am and 2:30 am – 6:00 pm. The monthly costs are $150 for the first child, $100 for the second child, and $50 for the third child.
