The 2012 SFA Auction Co-Chairs, Rosana Medina and Jennifer Bush, are pleased to announce that this years 14th Annual Auction Gala will be held at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Tickets to this auction dinner dance will include:

During this year’s Model United Nations conference held on September 24, two St. Francis alumni were honored and awarded.  Maggie Morris and Kevin Kiely, both freshmen at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, were recognized for their achievements throughout the competition.  Maggie received formal commendation by South Orange County Model United Nations (SOCOMUN), and Kevin received two awards: Outstanding Achievement and Best Research Paper for his committee work.  Congratulations to both Maggie and Kevin.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, St. Francis of Assisi students will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, our school’s patron saint. This is a special time when we can focus our wonderful school and on St. Francis who chose to live a life that was poorer than the poor whom he served.

Celebration Schedule

Our special day of celebration will begin with the celebration of Mass at 9:30 A.M. at Santa Clara de Asis Church with Fr. Sy as our celebrant.

Following Mass, all students will return to their classrooms and resume their regular morning schedule.

Our “Blessing of the Animals” will take place in the afternoon followed by regular day dismissal. This event is open to students, parents, family guests and invited media only. Attendees for this special gathering should begin arriving, with or without pets, between 1:40 – 2:00 P.M. Please enter through the side gate and move to the athletic field area.  You do not need to obtain a visitor’s pass for this occasion. You will be able to join your children and unite them with their pets.

At 2:00 P.M. all grades will proceed to designated areas on the field area.  The animal blessings will take place between 2:00 P.M. and 2:30 P.M.

Dismissal for the day will begin once the “Blessing of the Animals” is concluded.  We will follow rainy day dismissal procedures.  All students must be picked up from their classrooms.  Students with parents in attendance MUST check in with their teacher before leaving campus.

Pre-K students MUST return to their classroom for usual check-out/sign-out.

Please be aware that parking will be at a premium and plan accordingly.

Blessing of the Animals

St. Francis loved God and man, as well as all God’s creatures. In this light, we plan to celebrate this feast day with the “Blessing of the Animals”. Therefore, PLEASE NOTE:

The “Blessing of the Animals” is scheduled to take place Tuesday, October 4th at 2:00 – 2:30 P.M.  Parents may arrive with pets at 1:40 – 2:00 pm.

Weather permitting, we will gather on the grass area of the field or on the black top under the lunch table shelters if there is light rain or drizzle. DESIGNATED AREAS FOR EACH CLASS WILL BE MARKED.

ALL animals MUST BE brought to school on leashes, in cages, or other type of pet housing/containers as applicable to your respective pets. Your dog must be on a leash no longer then six (6) feet in length with someone who is able to control the dog. Also, please be prepared to clean up after your pet. Should weather become a factor, we will attempt to carry out the blessings in the respective classrooms, following the same schedule.

Please note well, if the blessing takes place in the classrooms (due to rain), only live pets that can be contained in cages/terrariums will be allowed. We must follow our preferred safety precautions. Therefore, non-caged animals will not be permitted in the classrooms.

Students who have no pet(s) or who own a pet that is too large for transport, or may have tendencies to become nervous or agitated around other animals and/or in a crowd of children and adults, may bring one small, favorite stuffed animal, or a picture of a pet, for blessing. This applies to the outdoor or indoor situation.

MEDIA NOTE:  Members of the media need to RSVP by calling the front office at (714) 695-3700 no later than 12:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 so that special parking arrangements and visitor passes may be prepared.  On the day of the event, attending media needs to check in at the front office between 1:00 and 1:30 P.M. to receive their passes.

On behalf of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, we would like to personally invite you to participate in our 2011 Annual Charity Golf Tournament and Casino Night, that directly benefits our private, non-profit Catholic school (Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Eight).  St. Francis of Assisi is our community’s tri-parish school that collaborates with our three local parishes of Saint Martin de Porres, San Antonio de Padua, and Santa Clara de Asis. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Alumni Mathew Hunker and Daniel Latham have recently been awarded scouting’s highest honor, the level of Eagle Scout. Both Hunker and Latham attended St. Francis from preschool to eighth grade, for a total of 10 years each.

These Eagle Scouts have completed a large amount of community service during their time at St. Francis. Troop 99 of Yorba Linda has been involved with St. Francis over the years, and has dedicated its time in many ways. The most notable being Latham’s Eagle Scout project where he raised funds, designed, constructed and installed wooden shelving units for organization of student papers for eight 5th-8th grade classrooms. The shelving units were requested by the St. Francis faculty in June 2010 and the units were completed and installed by Latham and Troop 99 in February, 2011.

Equally as impressive, Hunker has earned 60 merit badges and has received many religious awards including: Pillars of Faith – Duty to God, Pope Pius XII, Ad Altare Dei, Parvuli Dei & Light of Christ.  For his Eagle project, Hunker planned, raised funds and executed the removal, replacement and upgrade of the floor covering classrooms three and four in the St. Martin de Porres Church Parish Hall.  This project took three days to complete. Luckily, he had the assistance of 22 volunteers, which dedicated a total of 206 hours to the project.

Daniel Latham

As part of their Boy Scout activities, Hunker and Latham have hiked hundreds of miles and camped overnight more than 90 nights.  Their most recent hike was to the top of a 12,500 mountain in New Mexico in July, 2011, at Philmont Scout Ranch.

“The St. Francis staff is very proud of these young men. As educators, it is our greatest pleasure to hear of the success of our alumni in their chosen paths,” said Tom Waszak, newly appointed St. Francis Principal.

Both students graduated from St. Francis in 2008 and are scheduled to graduate from Catholic high schools in 2012. Hunker is excelling at Servite by maintaining his status on the Principal’s High Honor Roll while competing on the track team. Latham started to play the saxophone at St. Francis’ Wind Ensemble, and has continued to play the saxophone at Mater Dei High School as part of the Honors Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, Symphonic Band, and Marching Band. He is also the captain of the MDHS volleyball team.
